Dragon Quest é vagamente baseado no Dragon Quest III. Os nomes e alguns dos personagens são familiares, mas o mapa-múndi é menor e tem uma forma muito diferente. Os dois personagens principais são Abel e Tialah. Tialah recebe a lendária Pedra Vermelha do sábio Mestre Yogi da Vila Aliahan. Logo depois, Tialah é sequestrado pelo malvado Baramos, que quer usar a Pedra Vermelha para ressuscitar o Grande Dragão e receber a vida eterna. Abel jurou resgatar Tialah e ele recebe a Pedra Azul, que só pode selar o Dragão depois de liberado.
