Moomin acontece na pacífica Moominvalley , onde o jovem Moomin, junto com seus pais Moominpappa e Moominmamma, vivem no grande e azul Moominhouse . A série segue muitas aventuras divertidas ou mesmo obscuras da família Moomin e seus amigos ao redor do Moominvalley ou às vezes fora dele. A maioria das histórias envolve a descoberta de objetos mágicos e criaturas, aventuras em diferentes locais ou lidar com situações cotidianas. Enquanto muitos episódios são fiéis ou pelo menos vagamente baseados nos romances e histórias em quadrinhos, a série tem sua própria continuidade consistente.
